Number Tricks

Ms. Arroyo asked the class to see if they could find the sum of the first 50 odd numbers. As everyone settled down to their addition, Terry ran to her and said, “The sum is 2,500.” Ms. Arroyo thought, “Lucky guess,” and gave him the task of finding the sum of the first 75 odd numbers. Within 20 seconds, Terry was back with the correct answer of 5,625.

How does Terry find the sum so quickly?

Creativity : Engineering Challenge : Kite

daily brain teaser

Engineering challenges are fun activities that are frequently assigned to students in physics or engineering classes, but they can easily be used outside of these venues. An engineering challenge usually has a simple goal and some rules about what sorts of materials you are allowed to use. These are great ways to get people thinking creatively and to foster teamwork and competition. Try an engineering challenge at a birthday party, office outing, scout meeting, or any other gathering where you want to have fun and exercise your creativity.

The objective in the Kite challenge is to construct a kite out of a sheet of paper, plastic drinking straws and tape. The winning kite will be the one to reach the highest altitude with a fixed length of string. If you don’t have a windy place nearby, you can allow the contestants to run with the kite to simulate wind. To measure altitude, a simple angle altimeter can be purchased at many hobby stores, or you can create your own with a protractor, string and a small weight.

Memory : Review

daily brain teaser

No matter how well you learn something, if you never access that information you will probably forget it. If you want to remember something, you need to review it from time to time to keep it fresh in your mind.

Review can also be very helpful immediately after learning something, because it can help solidify the important facts and make it easier for the brain to identify what to remember. You can use this to your advantage by making sure that you set aside some time at the end of a study session to review what you have learned. Just going over the main facts in your mind will be very helpful. You might also consider doing this after a class lecture. Take a few minutes to review your notes and go over the instructor’s main points.

When building the Golden Gate Bridge, the lead structural engineer insisted on the installation of a safety net even though its $130,000 cost was deemed exorbitant. Over the four years of its construction, the net saved 19 men, who named themselves the “Halfway to Hell Club.”

Are UFOs Real??

optical-illusions-part-2-40

The existence of UFOs and extraterrestrial life can spark a heated debate. Some swear that aliens from other planets really do visit us, while others scoff at their existence. I, myself, am not quite sure where I stand. I won’t completely discount the idea that aliens and UFOs exist, but I do find the idea to be a little far fetched.

However, in light of some new evidence, I might just have to form a new opinion regarding UFOs and their existence!

optical-illusions-part-2-40

Bam! How’s that for solid evidence that UFOs exist?!

Okay, so maybe it’s not rock solid evidence, but it’s still a fun UFO illusion. This is a perfectly timed photograph with the young boy standing in just the right spot. The sun is shining in just the right spot on the wall, but if it was any earlier or later, the effect would have been lost. The little boy seems to be standing there in awe of the UFO, perhaps waiting for it to beam him up?

The graffiti in this photo makes me wonder, though. Was it dumb luck that the sun shines in just the right spot or was it painted that way on purpose? I’m thinking that the artist quickly painted the UFO when the sun was shining in just the right spot to give the illusion of a beam of light. I find it really hard to believe that the perfect light placement in this photo was pure coincidence.

What do you think?

If you’re looking for more fun illusions with UFOs, be sure to check out the face in Area 51!
