The original Scotty from Star Trek served in the military and even shot 2 German snipers!

James Doohan was a Canadian character and voice actor best known for his role as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in the television and film series Star Trek.

At the beginning of the Second World War, Doohan joined the Royal Canadian Artillery. He was commissioned a lieutenant in the 13th Field Artillery Regiment of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division.

Doohan went to England in 1940 for training. His first combat was the invasion of Normandy atJuno Beach on D-Day. Shooting two snipers, Doohan led his men to higher ground through a field of anti-tank mines, where they took defensive positions for the night.

Doohan was hit by six rounds fired from a Bren gun by a nervous Canadian sentry: Four in his leg, one in the chest, and one through his right middle finger. The bullet to his chest was stopped by a silver cigarette case.

His right middle finger had to be amputated, something he would conceal during his career as an actor.

And forced to carry ten nails.

I work diligently without any pay

And follow your many trails.

I do not smell very well

But at least I have many eyes.

I have two tongues but never yell

And I'll bet you know my size.

What am I?

Today's Daily Trivia Quiz (Nov 27, 2013)

Christmas Songs for Children

These are some of the Christmas songs you may have learned as a child. How much do you remember from them?

Take the Quiz at Braingle.com

Creativity : Defer Judgment

Deferring judgment is an important rule for brainstorming sessions, and it's just as important for working with your own ideas. If you judge an idea too quickly, you will reject many ideas that have real potential. Early ideas are easy to reject because they are imperfect, but they can be improved and embellished. Sometimes the best ideas come from combining parts of several imperfect ideas.

If you feel yourself jumping to judge or reject an idea (either your idea or someone else's idea), take a moment and allow yourself to recognize that not all ideas spring forth from the mind in perfect order.

Memory : Social Interactions

As we have learned, events with emotional significance get preferential treatment by the hippocampus and are more likely to make strong memories. The most important way that emotions are created is from interactions with other people.

Modern technology is constantly reducing the social interactions that we have on a daily basis. Drive-through pickup, self-checkout lines, Internet shopping and email are examples of ways that today's technology isolates us from face-to-face interactions with other people. Humans are social beings, and social interactions are required for good mental health. Several studies have shown that people with social lifestyles have stronger cognitive function than people who are reclusive. Social ties can also help one deal with life's stressful events.

Try to get in touch with more people. Strike up a conversation with the person next to you on the bus, or the checkout person at the store. In addition to the mental benefit, you will be making the other person's day a little more interesting.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Anemic

a-ne-mic

adj :: Lacking force, vitality, or spirit.

"That was an anemic attempt to hit the baseball. It barely went 10 feet."

Einstein invented a type of refrigerator that lasted 100 years!

Einstein invented a type of refrigerator that lasted 100 years!

In 1926, five years after winning the Nobel Prize in Physics, Albert Einstein read a news story about the death of a Berlin family, killed by toxic fumes that leaked from a broken seal in their refrigerator.

Dangerous leaks like this were becoming an alarmingly frequent occurrence as old-fashioned ice boxes were replaced with modern refrigerators that used poisonous coolants.

Einstein became preoccupied with this tragedy, insisting that a better refrigerator design must be possible. He and former student Leó Szilárd, set out to find one.

They used their knowledge of thermodynamics to produce an absorption refrigerator, a device that drove a combination of safer gases and liquids through three interconnected circuits.

It required only a small pilot light as a heat source and was hermetically sealed and safe, so safe that some experts estimate the casing could last 100 years.

France produces so much nuclear energy that it actually exports energy and makes a profit!

Nuclear energy supplies electricity to more than 60 million homes each year, according to the Clean and Safe Energy Coalition. More than 100 commercial nuclear power plants produce 20 percent of all the electricity in the United States.

One of the major advantages to nuclear energy is that it has very little impact on the environment.

Electricity produced with nuclear power is also significantly cheaper than electricity produced by burning coal or fossil fuels.

According to the University of Wisconsin Madison, France produces so much nuclear energy that it actually exports energy and makes a profit.

Coal power plants give off more radiation than nuclear power plants do. Radiation from nuclear power plants has not caused any deaths aside from the Chernobyl accident in Ukraine.

Steve Jobs had a chance to cure his cancer, but he chose alternative treatments instead!

Steve Jobs “magical thinking” may have defined his business brilliance, but it could have been his downfall in his fight against cancer.

According to Steve Jobs’ biographer, Jobs eventually came to regret the decision he had made years earlier to reject potentially life-saving surgery in favor of alternative treatments like acupuncture, dietary supplements and juices.

Though he ultimately embraced the surgery and sought out cutting-edge experimental methods, they were not enough to save him. His cancer was discovered during a CT scan in 2003; during which doctors saw a “shadow” on his pancreas.

He had a neuroendocrine islet tumor, one of the 5% or so that are slow growing and most likely to be cured.
