Sweets: Bag End Cake

"Well, I think this turned out well!? It’s my fantasy cake I think. I’d love to have one for me, hehe.

Conor loves the Dwarfs Song in The Hobbit, both the one that Thorin sings and the end titles by Neil Finn. They are his sleepy songs. So I thought a hobbit cake would be appropriate.

I started with one large cake and two smaller cakes, with a 10oz/10oz/12oz mixture for the cake for ease of sculpting. Crafted the shape, applied buttercream and then icing and decoration. Gandalf, the door and windows are fimo, for mementos. Gandalf is a foil frame with fimo outer."

The U.S. printed special money for Hawaii during World War II. This is why.

The U.S. printed special money for Hawaii during World War II. This is why.

After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the United States recognized that a Japanese invasion of Hawaii was possible.

If this happened, the Japanese would have access to a large amount of U.S. currency.

To avoid this possibility, the U.S. Army recalled $200 million worth of U.S. currency in Hawaii and set them on fire.

The Federal Reserve replaced all that money with special bills with the word “Hawaii” on them.

In case of a Japanese invasion, these special notes would become worthless, preventing the Japanese from holding millions of American dollars.

The special currency was in use until 1944.
