Vocabulary : Valence

daily brain teaser

The number of subjects or objects that a verb refers to in a sentence is called its valence. A verb that has only one subject is called an intransitive verb. In these sentences, there is no receiver of the action. Examples:

Bob whispers all the time.

Jane was the prettiest girl in school.

A verb that takes a subject and an object is called a transitive verb. In these sentences, something receives the action. Sometimes the doer of the action is omitted from the sentence, but it still counts as a transitive verb. Examples:

Frank eats ice cream.

Sally kicked the ball.

The ball was kicked.

Some verbs can take a subject and two objects. These are called ditransitive verbs. Example:

Jane gives the dog a treat.

Memory : Wake Up and Smell…

daily brain teaser

Take one of your scent canisters and place it next to your bed. When you wake up in the morning, take a deep whiff from the container. This will change up your morning routine and get new neurons firing in new ways. Activating new neural pathways is a great way to keep your mind in shape.

Creativity : Alternate Solutions

daily brain teaser

When we are confronted with a problem, we typically look for a solution by thinking about past problems that we have encountered. Because a certain solution worked last time, we are confident that it is the best. This is uncreative thinking.

A creative thinker thinks about the problem from many different angles. This gives them a number of possible solutions to choose from, which helps them find a unique elegant solution.

The next time you are confronted with a problem (even a very tiny one), instead of jumping to the first obvious solution, take a step back and see if you can find several alternatives. At first this is going to be difficult to do, but with practice you will be able to come up with many alternative solutions to your daily problems.

Head in a Tree Optical Illusion

tree optical illusion

Have you ever laid on the ground and looked for images in the clouds? Gone hiking and saw a tree that reminded you of something? Well, today’s tree optical illusion is a little nod to all of those fun images that we see in nature all around us…

tree optical illusion

It’s pretty obvious that this tree didn’t actually grow like this, but it’s still a fun tree illusion! It’s not every day that you see a tree in the shape of a head. Well, at least I’d hope not, otherwise I’m really missing out!

If you liked this tree optical illusion, you might want to hop over and find the faces in the tree!
