Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Eclat

e-clat

noun :: Brilliancy of success or effort; splendor; brilliant show; striking effect; glory; renown.

noun :: Demonstration of admiration and approbation; applause.

"Having obtained the two Hundred Pounds, we instantly left the Town, leaving our Manager and his Wife to act Macbeth by themselves, and took the road to Sterling, where we spent our little fortune with great eclat." --Austen, Jane

Stress : Breathing

The breathing pattern of someone who is under a lot of stress is likely to be shallow and rapid. This type of breathing lowers the amount of oxygen that can get into your bloodstream and up to your brain. Decreased oxygen can cause dizziness, headaches and heightened feelings of stress. Learning how to breath properly is one of the most important things you can do to help relax yourself. It's for this reason that controlled breathing is a part of almost every type of meditation practiced in the world.

Proper deep breathing starts with your diaphragm. Instead of puffing out your chest, try to puff our your belly as you breathe. Use your entire lung capacity. Breath in through your nose and out through your mouth.

Whenever you feel stressed, take a full five minutes to concentrate on deep breathes. This type of breathing will increase oxygen flow to your brain and release endorphins and hormones that act to sooth your nerves.

Memory : Link Party Trick

Once you get some practice using the Link System to remember lists of items, you can use it to perform an amazing party trick.

Tell everyone that you have a super memory and that you can remember twenty items after they are called out only once. Designate someone as the record keeper to confirm your feat.

Now, you should pick someone to call out an object. Create a visual association between this first object and yourself. This will help you remember the first item.

Now point to someone else and have them call out another object. In your mind, make a link between the two objects. Continue linking each object to the next until you have reached the end. Because you are controlling the pace that items are being called out, you can go as slow as you need to as you create your visual imagery. Naturally, the faster you go, the more impressive the trick will be.

Once you are done, it should be easy for you to recall all twenty items in order. Most people do not realize that anyone can have this type of memory with only a little practice.

Built in Bookcases with Window Seat

Built in Bookcases with Window Seat

These bookcases and window seat have been a long time in the making… I started the week of July 4th last year and I’m finally just about done with them! I worked on it in small bursts on nights and weekends, an hour or two then I wouldn’t get any time for a couple of weeks… nearly a year goes by pretty fast on that schedule!

All that’s left now is some knobs, a final coat of paint, then a few coats of poly to protect it. The entire unit put together is just over 16’ wide and nearly 7’ tall. Originally I was going to build them right up to the ceiling but didn’t like the look of it once I got the bookshelf up there, so I ended up cutting them down about 1’. All the lower cabinets have adjustable shelving, the uppers have fixed shelves and the window seat opens for storage for kids toys, games, etc…

The lower cabinets and window seat case are made from 1 sided pre-finished birch plywood, the bookcases are all sanded plywood for the case. All face frames, door rails and stiles are made from poplar. The counter tops and door panels are made from 3/4” & 3/8” MDF respectively. One of the trickiest parts of this project was replacing a 15’ baseboard with a hydronic toe kick heater… after admitting that I actually don’t know much about plumbing I called in the professional to hook that up. Under the window seat is a hinged panel in case we need to do any maintenance on the heater.

This was definitely the biggest project I’ve taken on yet, in both scope and overall size, and I’m extremely happy with the outcome… and more importantly so is my wife!

Thanks for looking!
