Tombstone Face Follows You Around

via Mighty Optical Illusions http://www.moillusions.com/2013/04/tombstone-face-follows-you-around.html

Here’s an interesting, yet spooky tombstone my brother stumbled upon while visiting Paris. Based on famous “Hollow Face” illusion (examples can be found here and here), face of the deceased doctor follows you around, as you’re passing-by his final resting place. I can’t imagine how one would react if he encountered this during the night, with full moon shining over the doctor’s face… Feel free to imagine! In case I haven’t fully explained the illusion – Hollow Face appears embossed / convex, even though the shape is actually carved deep into the tombstone…

Creativity : Goal Visualization

There is a strong connection between mental pictures and emotions. If you visualize something happy, you will feel happier and if you visualize something sad, you will start to feel sad. Here is one way to take advantage of this phenomenon.

Pick a goal that you want to achieve. You may want to start with a small goal and work your way up to bigger goals as you gain practice with this technique. Let's say that your goal is to go bowling and get two strikes in a row. Close your eyes and picture yourself bowling. Try to involve all of your senses. How does the bowling alley sound? What does the ball feel like? Do you notice particular smells? Visualize yourself getting the two strikes in a row. Pay attention to your feelings and recognize how much you will enjoy achieving this goal. This visualization will help your mind prepare for achieving the goal.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Recreant

rec-re-ant

noun :: A faithless or disloyal person. A Coward.

"When little Vladimir finally relinquished her, with assurances that he was 'desolated to leave so early', she was ready to rest, and see how her recreant knight had borne his punishment." -- Louisa May Alcott

Memory : Teaching Mnemonics

Most teachers do not want their students to simply memorize facts. Teachers tend to put more emphasis on advanced skills such as reasoning, problem solving and synthesis. Memorization is seen as a lesser skill, and as a result most classrooms do not teach mnemonics. What is often overlooked is that memorization is a necessary first step. If the students cannot remember the facts, there is little hope that they will be able to use them to solve problems or synthesize new ideas. With effective mnemonic instruction, students could get past the memorization step much more quickly and spend more time on advanced educational goals.

Medal Chest for Mom

Medal Chest for Mom

This is a chest I built for my mom to house/display all her track and field medals (she’s a senior games athlete with enough medals that dad counts them in pounds, not by number….and she needs a place to keep them). I decided to make this an early birthday/mothers day present as well.

It’s about 18” long by 9.5” deep and 12” tall (that includes the 2” arch on the lid) and has 2 little drawers insode that can be removed for display and to access the lower level. It’s lined in maroon and gold felt (FSU colors are garnet and gold, where she was part of the founding class of many Lady Seminole sports in the ‘60s) and sealed with many coats of shellac.

It’s made of 3/4” maple amd walnut, with aspen inner boxes and plywood bottoms. The carving (my first relief carving of which I am very proud) is in 1/4” basswood and measures 4” x 4” and is inset 1/8” into the maple front.

It took more than two months to build and is the reason I’ve been so quiet lately.

If you’d like to see the details (and there’s a lot) check out my blog...

Thanks for looking!
