As bizarre as the story of the man in the iron mask is, it was actually inspired by a prisoner in France during the 17th century!




The prisoner was forced to wear a velvet mask on his face, and was never seen without it on!




In fact, to this day, nobody even knows who the prisoner was! What is known is that the prisoner was kept in an extremely comfortable cell.




There are many theories as to who the man actually was, some of which are more believable than others!




The philosopher Voltaire believed that the prisoner was actually the King's half brother, and the King wanted him to be hidden from the world!
