For the first Foo Fighters album, Dave Grohl was the only band member. He played all the instruments!

Most rock bands have, well, more than one member. Not the Foo Fighters though. At least not at first.

Dave Grohl started the Foo Fighters in 1995 and was the "band's" sole member. His previous band, Nirvana, had just split up after the suicide of their lead singer, Kurt Cobain.

Instead of joining another band after Nirvana dissipated, Grohl headed to the studio and recorded an album's worth of songs in five days. He'd been writing the songs during his time with Nirvana but never shared them.

With the exception of one guitar part on the song "X-Static," Grohl played every instrument and sang all the vocals for all twelve songs.

He made a cassette and started handing it out to people for feedback. The record industry took notice and Grohl formed a band in order to support it.

He recruited Nate Mendel on bass, William Goldsmith on drums and Pat Smear on guitar.
