The last Brazilian emperor hated being emperor so much, he didn't stop the coup that overthrew him!

Dom Pedro II was the second and last ruler of the Empire of Brazil. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he was the seventh child of the previous emperor and a member of the esteemed House of Braganza. His father was forced to abdicate on short notice and left his five-year-old son as the person in charge!

If you haven’t studied political history, children as monarchs are usually killed or ousted from power. By the time Pedro II reached his maturity he resented the fact that he was in control and wanted nothing more than to be rid of his responsibilities.

Instead of shirking his duties, Pedro dedicated his life to it. Although the empire was on the verge of disintegration, Pedro was able to turn Brazil into an up and coming power.

Interestingly, Pedro ruled for 58 years and was wildly popular. A group of military leaders exacted a coup and removed him from power.

Most agree that the people did not wish for change and that the coup had little support. What facilitated their attempts was Pedro. He had become so tired of being a monarch he virtually stepped aside!
