Since the 1990s, Carmel, Indiana has been replacing all signaled intersections with roundabouts

Roundabouts are popular in Europe and on the east coast, where they're often called rotaries. However, they have yet to really make their mark in the rest of the country. The town of Carmel, Indiana is currently leading the charge on bringing roundabouts to the midwest.

Since the 1990s, Carmel has been strategically replacing traffic lights with roundabouts. There are lots of benefits to this, including a gas savings of 24,000 gallons/year per roundabout; a construction costs savings of $125,000 per intersection; accidents with injuries have dropped by 80 percent and total accidents have dropped by 40 percent.
