IMDB is one of the oldest websites on the internet, and has a fascinating origin story!

In 1989, a simple post was made on Usenet (an early precursor to the internet) and it was titled "Those Eyes". The list identified all the actresses with the most beautiful eyes, and the thread began to grow and grow, as threads do. It wasn't long before the thread expanded, and became known as "The List".

Around the same time, another project was launched where users were asked to rate movies on a scale from 1-10. Of course, this thread, just like the last one, began to grow exponentially.

In 1990, a man named Col Needham decided to combine both of those lists, and he began working on a series of other lists as well...which eventually totalled around 10,000 different lists. He then combined these lists into a database, and in 1993, he released his baby onto the World Wide Web. That website? The Internet Movie Database, aka IMDB.

Nearly 20 years later, the website is one of the top 50 most visited websites in the world.
