If Winston Churchill has his way, we would have had World War III just days after WWII ended!

World War III has been closer than we can imagine on multiple occasions. One of the most notable was "Operation Unthinkable", the brainchild of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Churchill was furious in the aftermath of WWII because the Red Army of the USSR was allowed to advance into Berlin unchallenged by the armies of the Allies. With an intense dislike of communism and strong distrust towards Stalin, Churchill decided to take out the USSR while they were still weak from the war.

Operation Unthinkable called for a huge, speedy offensive in Central Europe. In order to obtain enough troops for the Blitzkrieg, the British suggested rearming 100,000 members of the German Wehrmacht. Thankfully, this plan never came to fruition and Europe was instead plunged into 40+ years of Cold War.
