The original version of the film "The Passion of Joan of Arc" was lost in a fire! How ironic. It was later found again in Norway.

The Passion of Joan of Arc is a silent French film produced in 1928, based on the actual record of the trial of Joan of Arc. The film, since the day it was released, has been regarded as a landmark film and one of the finest of its kind in cinema history.

Since its release, many different versions of the film have been released. Most of these new cuts were a result of government or church censorship. The original version was lost for decades after a fire destroyed the original master of the film, until one day the original film canisters turned up in an unlikely location.

In 1981, an employee of a mental institution in Oslo, Norway found several canisters of movie film in a janitor's closet. The canisters were sent to the Norwegian Film Institute where they were stored for three years before being examined. When they finally looked, they discovered that they had found the original cut of the film!

There weren't any records of the film being shipped to Oslo, but film historians believe that the director of an institution in Oslo might have requested for a special copy of the film because he was a historian.
