Starbucks had to close 61 Australian stores because Australians’ coffee culture is too sophisticated!

In July 2008, Starbucks closed 61 of their 84 Australian stores and laid off nearly 700 employees.

The company, which is a huge success in the United States and other parts of the world, struggled in Australia. These 61 stores were "underperforming."

The company left South Australia, Tasmania and ACT but kept stores open in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Some experts said that Starbucks did not truly understand the Australian coffee market.

While the company was a success in the United States for introducing quality, European-style coffee, Australia already had a "very sophisticated coffee culture."

In the end, Starbucks couldn't compete with Australia's rich coffee history. That same month, although unrelated, they also closed 600 stores in the United States.
