William A. Farrar, the police chief in Rialto, California was tired of hearing two completely different sides to the same story, that always involved angry citizen being arrested by a police officer who is accused of being power hungry. To combat these complaints, Farrar decided to equip his officers with tiny video cameras that capture audio as well as video.
These cameras can be attached to collars, sunglasses, hats, and have a battery life that can last much longer than an extended shift for a police officer. Police Chief Farrar teamed up with the Institute of Criminology at the University of Cambridge, and an assistant professor at Hebrew University!
Amazingly, the police Chief's experiment had some interesting results! Within the 12 month trial, the department had an 88 percent decline in the number of complaints filed against police officers! Furthermore, the Rialto police officer's used force nearly 60 percent less often! They only used it in 25 instances, compared to the previous year's 61!
