You may scoff at coin collecting as an old person's hobby, but if done right, it could be quite lucrative. It turns out that certain coins are worth a lot of money. Specifically, wheat pennies can be worth tens of thousands.
A number of factors, including whether the coin is circulated or uncirculated (circulated meaning that it was used in commerce and thus has some wear and tear, and uncirculated meaning it was never used for payment), and what kind of mint marker it has, determine the penny's value.
A 1943 S bronze circulated penny is worth $78,000! More impressively, an uncirculated 1943 bronze penny is worth $90,000. A 1944 uncirculated steel penny is worth $100,000. And amazingly, an uncirculated 1943 D bronze penny is worth $1.25 million!
