1 out of every 86 adults in Louisiana is in jail—and the reason why will shock you!

There are a lot of people in jail in Louisiana—does this mean that the state has more criminals or is it something to do with it's laws and incarceration system? Apparently prison in Louisiana is a $182 million "industry" because many inmates are housed in for-profit facilities.

While several private prison companies are players in the market, the major players are rural sheriffs. With each inmate worth $24.39 a day in state money, sheriffs may just be incentivized to keep up the number of prisoners. In the past two decades, Louisiana's prison population has doubled. However, this is due to high crime rates too—New Orleans leads the nation in number of homicides.

With one in every 86 people in jail, Louisiana is the world's prison capital. It is 13 times China's prison rate and 20 times that of Germany.
