Andre-Francois Raffray thought he was getting a good deal when he agreed to pay Jeanne Calment $500/month for her grand apartment. The specifics of the deal were this - Raffray must pay $500 a month to Calment until she died, and considering she was 90 years old at the time, seems like a steal.

However, Calment then went on to live another 32 years to be the oldest person at 122 years old. She outlived Raffray who died at 77 years old. His widow then had to pay Calment $500/month.

This "for life" arrangement is common in France. When the owner dies, the renter gets the apartment, no matter how much has been paid. Didn't work out very well for Raffray though.
