This is from a couple of years ago. My daughters had gotten to the point where they would prefer cash for Christmas, but that’s just boring, so I always try to find something fun to do with it. My younger daughter and her boyfriend are into geocaching, so I made a fake geocaching.com web page with instructions to find it (in the woods behind the house). She also needed a jewelery box. Since it was a treasure to be found, it needed to be in a treasure chest, filled with gold dollar coins (had to go to three banks to get them all).
The box is made from 1/4” red oak, glued together with Titebond, no nails or screws. The curved top is actually six strips with the edges beveled as appropriate. 1/2” square pieces reinforce the corners of the box and serve as a support for the tray. Then several coats of clear shellac, red velvet lining, and brass hardware.
Christmas morning started with a tiny box containing the keys (“What’s this?”), then another box containing an envelope with the website address, where she had to solve a puzzle to get the GPS coordinates (a puzzle only she could solve so nobody else could decipher the coordinates), and finally a walk through the woods and across the hard frozen swamp to those coordinates to find the box (carefully hidden the night before in the roots of an old tree).
All in all a fun Christmas, and one she won’t soon forget!
