The legal system stands proudly behind the protection of minors, especially when it comes identifying young offenders on the news.
Furthermore, police officers are required to have parental consent before interrogating a minor, whether they are a key witness to a crime or the prime suspect.
Tia Skinner and her legal team were aware of this rule, and tried to use it as a defence in the case against her as police officers did not have parental consent. So, what's the big deal?
Well, the 'big deal' is that Tia Skinner was put on trial for hiring two other teenagers to help kill her parents. She was responsible for her father dying, and for her mother receiving life threatening injuries.
Police couldn't ask permission from her parents to interview Tia Skinner because one of them was dead, and the other was in critical condition!
So, why did Tia Skinner try to kill both of her parents? They took away her cellphone, and refused to let her see her boyfriend of two weeks at the time - who was later hired to kill her parents.
Don't worry - Tia Skinner who was 17 at the time of the murder blames her actions on a bad temper. The judge gave her no sympathy, and was convicted of first degree murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to murder.
