Andy Kaufman was an actor, entertainer and performance artist. While many thought of his as a comedian, he referred to himself as a "song-and-dance man" and disdained the traditional joke-telling of comedians. Kaufman preferred to play elaborate pranks.
During one of his shows, he had his "grandmother" sit in a chair on the side of the stage. At the end of the show, the "woman" took off her mask and revealed himself to be comedian and actor Robin Williams.
Another time, an elderly woman pretended to die onstage of a heart attack. Wearing a Native American headdress, Kaufman proceeded to "revive" here.
And after one show, Kaufman invited the audience to go out for milk and cookies with him. They piled into 24 buses to do so.
He also told all that were interested to meet him the next morning on the Staten Island Ferry. There, he continued his show.
