Ernest Hemingway burned Gertrude Stein pretty amazingly in one of his books!

Gertrude Stein wrote the famous line "a rose is a rose is a rose" in her poem "Sacred Emily." Seems rather self-explanatory. A rose is, in fact, a rose. Many interpret the phrase to mean "things are what they are."
And it expresses Stein's view that, by using the name of something, you evoke the imagery and emotions associated with it.
Ernest Hemingway, whom Stein worked with, parodied the phrase in his novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls," when he wrote "a rose is a rose is an onion."
And allegedly, after he and Stein had a falling out, he changed the sentence to "a bitch is a bitch is a bitch is a bitch." Ouch.
