Carcinogens are toxic chemicals that can cause cancer. Today, we know that cigarettes are highly carcinogenic.
Consistent smoking can cause lung and many other cancers. However, carcinogens can be found elsewhere as well; unfortunately, they are sometimes in common substances, such as car fumes.
In 2012, the World Health Organization announced that diesel fumes can cause cancer and are even more carcinogenic than cigarette smoke.
This isn't good news for those that spend a lot of time around exhaust. Poorer countries often have more trucks, tractors and farm equipment that let's off toxic fumes.
The United States requires diesel engines to burn much cleaner than they did in years past. Miners and toll operators are still in danger because of the high concentration of fumes they're exposed to though.
