The movie “Russian Ark” was filmed in a single 99-minute take!

Films are composed of multiples scenes and each scene is composed of several different shots.

These scenes, inevitably, require multiple takes to get them right. This was not the case for the 2002 film "Russian Ark."

A "shot" in film is one "a film sequence photographed continuously by one camera." The movie follows a 19th century Russian diplomat as he wanders through 99 years of Russian history - from Catherine the Great to Pushkin to Nicholas II.

Cameraman Tillman Buttner accomplished this one-take feat that covered 4/5 of a mile, 33 sets, 867 actors, hundreds of extras, three orchestras, and dozens of technicians.

The one take format did not sacrifice quality as "Russian Ark" is still "visually dazzling."
