You may not know the name Julius Chambers, but the world is better because of him. Chambers grew up in Ohio, went to Cornell and then graduated and began working as a reporter for the New York Tribune.

In 1872, he set about doing an investigative report on mental asylums. Along with the help of some friends and the city editor, he had himself committed to Bloomingdale Asylum.

He hoped to investigate alleged patient abuse. After spending 10 days in the asylum, his friends had him released.

Chambers reported on his experience in the Tribune and because of his story, 12 patients who had been misdiagnosed were released.

The Bloomingdale Asylum was reorganized and there was even a change made to the lunacy laws. Thanks, Julius Chambers.
