The US has been using the same poverty guidelines since 1965!

Poverty is the state of one who lacks a certain amount of material possessions or money. Absolute poverty or destitution refers to the deprivation of basic human needs, which commonly includes food, water, sanitation, clothing, shelter, health care and education.

Since 1965, there have been two slightly different versions of the federal poverty measure:

  • Poverty thresholds, which are more detailed and primarily used for statistical purposes; and

  • Poverty guidelines, which are a simplified version of the thresholds, primarily used for administrative purposes.

The US has been using the same poverty guideline since 1965. It assumes we spend 1/3 of our income on food, & sets the federal poverty level at 3 times the estimated cost of a family's food. However, we now spend only 1/6 of our income on food, while other necessities have become far more expensive.
