Germany has created a third gender in their birth certificate.

Germany has created a third gender in their birth certificate.

Seeing that as many as 1 in 2000 babies are born with ambiguous genitalia, Germany has recently allowed for a new gender: X for intersex.

This is an option for when the sex of the baby can’t be determined at birth. Babies registered with the X gender can later change it to male or female if they choose.

The law is intended to reduce pressure on parents to choose a gender for the baby. Many babies who were subjected to sex assignment surgery at an early age ended up unhappy.
