Back in 1936, Patricia Salter had an unusual hobby for a 12-year-old girl. She collected dirt. She had soil from 24 states, from British Columbia, England, Italy, Sweden and Brazil. Most of the samples were obtained by writing to people whose names appeared in newspapers and magazines.
