There's a medical code for just about anything. These are the crazier ones.

There's a medical code for just about anything. These are the crazier ones.

Although the debate over the delay of ICD-10 has been heated, if there’s one thing both sides can agree on, it’s the sometimes-hilarous specificity of some of the new ICD-10 codes.

The ICD-10 is the 10th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD), a medical classification list by the World Health Organization.

It codes for diseases, signs and symptoms, abnormal findings, complaints, social circumstances, and external causes of injury or diseases.

The code set allows more than 14,400 different codes and permits the tracking of many new diagnoses. The codes can be expanded to over 16,000 codes by using optional sub-classifications.

Some codes can be classified as “unusual”. One of them is code W5922XA: Struck by a turtle. Here's some more interesting ones:

  • V9542XA: Spacecraft crash injuring occupant, initial encounter.

  • A281: Cat scratch disease.

  • W5609XA: Other contact with dolphin, initial encounter.

  • S1087XA: Other superficial bite of other specified part of neck, initial encounter. (aka a hickie)

  • G4482: a headache associated with sexual activity

There are plenty more! Make sure you check the source link to check some unusual ones.
