Richard Nixon single-handedly ended the United States' biological and chemical weapons programs

While Richard Nixon may have resigned from the presidency in disgrace after the Watergate scandal, he made some significant changes before he left. In 1969, he unilaterallyordered that America discontinue its biological weapons program.




While this came as a surprise for many, it had been in the works for a while. During the Vietnam War, there was a call for the U.S. to stop using chemical weapons. And in talks with Canada and Great Britain, the three countries thought they could pass an international ban on biological weapons, but only if the U.S. Made the first step.
