The FBI spent years trying to decipher two notes left by a murder victim who couldn't write!

On June 30, 1999 the body of Rick McCormick was found in a field in Charles County, Missouri.

Authorities could not determine how his death came about or whether or not it was murder. Inside McCormick's pockets were two handwritten notes seemingly written in code.

The FBI's Cryptanalysis and Rackateering Records unit failed to decode the message as did the American Cryptogram Association. In 2011, the FBI appealed to the public to see if anyone could decode the notes, but this too failed.

It still remains uncertain whether McCormick actually wrote the notes. His mother said that he could only write his own name and his father said he only scribbled things.

And even if someone could decipher the code, perhaps it has nothing to do with McCormick's death.
