The record for longest gap between number 1 singles in the U.S. is 24 years and 11 months!

Cher’s “Believe” hit the coveted number 1 spot on March 13, 1999, her first time on that spot since “Dark Lady” on March 23, 1974.

This edges out the old record-holders, the Beach Boys, for their #1 singles gap of 21 years and 2 months (from 1966’s “Good Vibrations” and 1988’s “Kokomo”).

Cher also has the record for longest span of #1 hit singles, that is, most time between her first and last #1.

Her 1965 single with Sonny Bono, “I Got You Babe”, was a full 33 years before “Believe”.

The Man in Black himself, Johnny Cash has the record for longest gap between #1 albums on the Billboard 200: 36 years, 10 months, and 1 week. The albums were “Johnny Cash at San Quentin” (Sept. 13, 1969) and “American V: A Hundred Highways” (July 22, 2006).







A special recognition for delayed gratification belongs to Carlos Santana. He had a 30 year gap between his first appearance on the Hot 100 charts and his first #1 single, "Jingo" (Oct. 25, 1969) and "Smooth," featuring Rob Thomas (Oct. 23, 1999), respectively.
