New Zealand became the first country in the modern world to appoint an Official Wizard!

Ian Brackenbury Channell gets paid to be New Zealand's wizard. In 1974, Channell moved to Christchurch, New Zealand, and began to regularly speak on a ladder in Cathedral Square while wearing a wizard costume.

Though the City Council wanted him arrested, he became so popular that the square eventually became a public speaking area.

The real change came in 1982, when the New Zealand Art Gallery Directors Association decided that he was a living work of art and the city of Christchurch declared him Wizard of Christchurch.

Eight years later, the Prime Minister declared him the official wizard of New Zealand. Christchurch City Council had been paying him a small annual sum until he left in 2011 following the Christchurch Earthquake.
