Christianity has long considered suicide and attempted suicide as a sin. Historically in Christian churches, people who attempted suicide were excommunicated.




In the late 19th century in Great Britain, an attempted suicide was considered the same as an attempted murder and could be punished by hanging!




Nowadays, neither the United States nor Europe attempted suicide to be a crime, although in the US there might be penalties associated for those who attempt it.
