Slim-Fast Optical Illusion

via Mighty Optical Illusions http://www.moillusions.com/2012/12/slim-fast-optical-illusion.html

Slim Fast Optical IllusionMy last post started a really meaningful discussion, which I’m glad it did. I’m also very proud of you for keeping the discussion at civilised level, refraining yourselves from throwing insults at those not sharing same views.

As a reward, let me share this interesting illusion friend of mine found on Instagram. Since this is all the information I have on it, there isn’t much to say – except perhaps we can discuss what it could represent? Do you think it was intended as and ad for some sort of diet product? An art exhibition piece, perhaps? What do you think? BTW, I always have difficulty coming up with titles for these kind of general illusions. What do you think would be a perfect line for this? Spill your ideas! We can use the best one, and replace our current “Slim-Fast” headline with it.

Quatro Game

Quatro Game.... ala Steve Ramsey. After Steve posted his version of the Quatro Game, I had to do one. My version is a bit more compact, about 7.5 inches square, but works the same. The board is 1/4 inch walnut glued on top of 1/4 cherry faced plywood. The board is framed with white quarter sawn oak and splined with walnut.

1 1/4 inch holes were drilled through the walnut to create the board positions and reveal the cherry. The playing pieces are white oak and walnut, turned and cut from 3/4 inch stock and drilled with 3/8 inch holes to create the hollows in half the pieces. The game seems simple, but it is loaded with strategy. The object of the game is to get four pieces in a row that have some common characteristic….tall, short…..square, round…..light,dark…..solid, hollow. The kicker is, that your opponent chooses which piece you play. I explained the game to my wife, and the first time we played, she wupped me. Beginners luck? I’m not so sure.

Another Dice Puzzle

This is my version of a project posted by KnotCursor, vipond33, and others. I have yet to make a box for it.

The timber is American White Oak for the main body and Maple for the pips. That was mistake number 1, as, once oiled, the maple all but dissapeared against the oak. This is why I burnt a decal on to each dot.

I am quite dissapointed in that really, but I still have time to make another one before Christmas. It ia a gift for my father in law, so it needs to be good!!

Thanks for looking, and, as always, comments welcome,

Garry
