Students in Finland will get together and jump up and down, trying to push a city into the sea.

Students in Finland will get together and jump up and down, trying to push a city into the sea.

In the U.S., Baseball teams have rivalries, not cities. Not so in Finland. Two Finnish cities, Tampere and Turku, have a long-standing rivalry.

Usually, the two cities' residents usually just joke about the other city. Some of the most popular topics are the state of the Turku River, the Tampere food, and the respective regional accents.

Since 1997, though, Tampere students have traveled to the market square in Turku. There, they jump up and down in an effort to combat the post-glacial rebound and push the city back into the sea.

The government has shut down 17 times over the past 37 years! Should this be allowed to happen?

U.S. Citizens were up in arms during the most recent government sequestration in October, 2013. The government shut down from the 1st to the 17th. However, this sort of shut down is not that uncommon.

In the past 37 years, it has shut down 17 times. The most recent ones were in November 1995 and December to January 1996. Most were not as long as the once in 2013 though - they usually only last a couple of days.

Hal (Bryan Cranston) was in just as many episodes of Malcolm In The Middle as Malcolm Was!

When a show has a title character, viewers expect to see them in every episode. Supporting characters appear in most episodes, but may not be there for an episode here or there. They may be "on vacation" or "sick."

However, this was not the case with Malcolm in the Middle. The show's title character, Malcolm (played by Frankie Muniz) appears in 151 episodes. However, the other characters who play his family, Hal, Reese and Dewey, also appear in all 151 episodes. Francis and Lois also appear in all these episodes.

Round Travel Sized Quarto Game

Round Travel Sized Quarto Game

I made four round Quarto Games. Check out Woodworking for Mere Mortals for how to play it and build your own.

I’m calling this a travel version because of its small size and holes to prevent the pieces from getting jarred off the “board”.

The case is made of oak and stained with Minwax Jacobean and sealed with a wipe-on Minwax Satin Poly. The pieces were wiped with a Minwax brushing lacquer.

The holes and bottom are lined with black felt. I glued the felt to ordinary paper with the hole patterns already on the paper in order to cut it out easily. Then it was glued into the holes. (Yes I cut out a disc for each hole – the felt gives it some class – but my fingers were tired after all the scissor work.)

The top has a threaded brass insert that threads onto an allen-head screw that was drilled and tapped into the oak base. It only takes about 1-2 revolutions to put the top on.

For those interested in the sizes:

The box is 6” round x 1-5/8” tall. The top is 5/8” thick; base is 1” thick. The tall pieces are 1-1/4”. The short pieces are 7/8”. Each piece is 5/8” round/square. The holes are 13/16”. ID of the case is about 5-3/8”. The center is 1” diameter.

Enjoy!

Aquaman's Archnemesis is Autistic.

Aquaman's Archnemesis is Autistic.

Aquaman is the superhero of the sea. However, not everyone admires him. Aquaman's nemesis is the Black Manta. Black Manta's life began as an autistic child living in Baltimore, Maryland. As a boy, he liked to play by the sea until he was kidnapped and forced to work on a ship.

At one point, while he was on the ship, Black Manta saw Aquaman and tried to signal to him for help, but Aquaman didn't see him. Black Manta eventually fought his way off the ship.

He had grown to hate the sea and Aquaman who represented it. So he got himself a costume, built a high-tech submarine and took on Aquaman.

There is a mental disorder known as Walking Corpse Syndrome!

The Cotard Delusion, often called Walking Corpse Syndrome, is a rare mental disorder in which people believe that they are either literally, or figuratively dead. Other beliefs part of the Cotard delusion are that the person thinks they don't exist, decomposing, or have lost their blood and internal organs. Don't worry, though—it's all in their heads.

The syndrome is named after Jules Cotard, a French neurologist who was the first person to describe the condition. In an 1880 lecture in Paris, Cotard explained that the syndrome can have degrees that range from mild to severe. Self-loathing and despair are seen as mild degrees of the condition. Some of the more extreme ones involve chronic depression and intense delusions!

Luckily, there are numerous accounts of pharmacological treatment. Most commonly, antidepressants, anti-psychotics, and mood stabilizers are used to treat people suffering from the Cotard Delusion.
