Three people split a $30 dinner tab paying $10 each. They do not include a tip. As they are leaving, the manager realizes that they should have only been charged $25 for their meal. He gives a $5 bill to their waiter and tells him to refund their money. The waiter decides, since he was not tipped, to keep $2 and give the 3 people back only $1 each.
The three people have now paid a total of $27 for their meal (the original $30 they paid less the $3 they just got back from the waiter) and the waiter has $2 that he kept, for a total of $29.
If they originally paid $30 for their meal, where did the extra $1 go?
