You can kill a tree just by removing…

Girdling You can kill a tree just by removing a ring of bark on the main trunk. Since a tree grows outward by getting thicker, its water and nutrients are transported at a layer very close to the outermost layer. Girdling causes a disconnection of these layers of nutrient transport all the way around the tree, so it cuts off the portions of the tree above the girdle from the tree’s roots, starving the tree.
