Fordite: Jewelry Made of 1920s Car Paint

This jewelry is one of a kind.

The material it’s made of is called Fordite or sometimes Detroit Agate and it isn’t manufactured anywhere anymore. It doesn’t come from the earth like copper or silver; In fact, this material may be even be more rare than diamonds!

What is it

Fordite—as the name implies—was actually produced by the Ford company and other automobile companies back when cars were still painted by humans.

These car companies had no intention of creating fordite though, its creation was a complete mistake, the result of messy process. As a result, when this system of painting cars stopped so did the accidental production of fordite!

These paint over-spray layers were hardened repeatedly in the ovens that the car bodies went into to cure the paint. Some of these deeper layers were even baked 100 times. Eventually, the paint build-up would become obstructing, or too thick and heavy, and had to be removed.

They may not make it anymore but for now you can buy this material in amazing and unique jewelry. Companies like Urban Relic Designs produce jewelry out of this material.
