Desert Breath
The art piece that was finished in March 1997—17 years ago— not only still stands barely touched but can still be seen from space as clearly as the day it was finished.
More than 3 Olympic-sized swimming pools of sand moved!
The massive interlocking spirals are made of 89 cones and 89 holes, that in total required the relocation of 8000 cubic meters of sand.
Together the pieces occupy a total of 100,000 square meters or 1 million square feet in the Eastern Sahara desert.
The Artists
Desert Breath was designed by the group D.AST Arteam, specifically three artist: Danae Stratou, Alexandra Stratou, & Stella Konstantinidis.
The project is meant to suggest the “experience of infinity” that comes from a desert, especially on as expansive as the Saharan Desert.
The center is filled with water up to the top and it provides the only color to the piece that is not due to the shading in and over the cones.
Located between the sea and a body of mountains at the point where the immensity of the sea meets the immensity of the desert, the work functions on two different levels in terms of viewpoint: from above as a visual image, and from the ground, walking the spiral pathway, a physical experience.
