The Nobel Prize is one of the most prestigious in the world. It is awarded for work in peace-making, literature, chemistry, physical science and medical science. With it comes a great deal of money. Where does all this money come from? Well from Alfred Nobel of course.
Surprisingly, Nobel was not a peace maker himself. Quite the contrary, he invented dynamite. He named the explosive substance - that would cause many deaths - after the Greek word for 'power.' While not exactly a noble (pun intended) invention, dynamite did bring Nobel a lot of wealth.
In 1888, Alfred's brother died. The newspapers accidentally printed Alfred's obituary though. The obituary said that "the merchant of death is dead" and Nobel "became rich by finding ways to kill more people faster than ever before." Ashamed, Nobel decided he needed to do something to change his legacy.
He set aside 94% of his assets, about $472 million, to establish the Nobel prizes. And thus his legacy lives on.
